Welcome to your LED Applications news channel!

The opportunities presented by the increasing rapid adoption of high brightness LEDs, in all their forms and applications, represents nothing short of a "digital revolution" for a previously "analog" world. LEDs are having a substantial disruptive effect on a number of established technologies, and where there is disruption, there is an intense need for information.

LIGHTimes Online is here to serve the information needs of the LED industry supply chain, as well as integrators and non-architectural application solution providers with technology, product and market news updates for these rapidly evolving devices. Our readership also includes LED packagers, technology enablers and service companies seeking the the answers to how best to meet their customers' needs.

For architectural lighting and applications news of interest specifically to lighting designers, specifiers, and architectural lighting decision makers, along with luminaire designers, lighting system integrators and lighting subsystem developers, please visit our sister publication, Solid State Lighting Design.

Meijo University Orders Aixtron System for Production of GaN-based UV And White LEDs
LIGHTimes News Staff

July 28, 2010...Aixtron AG announced a new order for one Close Coupled Showerhead® GaN based LED MOCVD system from Meijo University, in Nagoya, Japan. The university is an established Aixtron customer in Japan. The order was received earlier this year and the system will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2010 in a 3x2-inch wafer configuration. Aixtron says that its local support team will commission the new reactor at Meijo University. The order includes both the EpiCurveTT and Aixtron Argus in-situ tool. The Argus in-situ tool is a new multi-channel pyrometer for real-time surface temperature measurement and analysis. Aixtron boasts that it is the only thermal profiling device available for a complete susceptor temperature mapping.

Associate Professor Dr. Motoaki Iwaya commented, "Meijo University plans to establish the LED Cooperative Research Center to develop white LEDs and UV-LEDs for lighting and bactericidal light sources with super energy-saving, high color rendering properties, long life-time and low-cost. This center has been selected as an advanced research institute, and funded by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The center will be shared with partner companies for collaboration. One of the collaborating companies, EL-SEED Corp., a start-up venture company from Meijo University, will conduct the research project of next-generation white LED supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) at the center."

Dr. Iwaya added, "We have been very happy with our current system, an AIX 200/4 RF-S. Furthermore, Aixtron´s proven R&D showerhead systems have demonstrated in the past their great scalability and easy process transfer to showerhead production systems. The 3x2-inch system enables us to easily switch between 2-, 3- and 4-inch wafers, without any major adaption of the process conditions. Altogether, we are confident that the Aixtron MOCVD system is the best for the challenging task of GaN based LED development."

The Meijo University Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of Japanese longest established faculties. Today the university's research targets include nanotechnology as well as semiconductor materials.

Sony Unveils Prototype 360 Degree Autostereoscopic Cylindrical Display
LIGHTimes News Staff

July 28, 2010...3D displays have been a mainstay of science fiction for years. While many depictions have full-color images projected into mid-air, the technology has not gotten there yet. However, Sony has created a full color, cylindrical 3D display prototype. The prototype 3D display does not require glasses. Sony unveiled the device at Siggraph in LA. It has a cylindrical shape that allows viewing of an object from any angle at one degree intervals at the same time. The Raymodeler 360 degree autostereoscopic device uses a set of formulas to create the images based on 8 x 2D digital images 45 degrees apart. The formulas transform Cartesian coordinates (x,y,z) to cylindrical ones. Standard 3D modeling software can do this as well. The compact device uses LED backlighting. Gesture sensors allow viewers to control and interact with volumetric objects from all angles. It creates 360 unique 24 bit color images that are revealed at the same time. It measures 13 cm in diameter and 20 cm in height. People can sense the depth of an object because left and right eyes see different images. A graphics processor allows the user to interact with the images in real time. A video on Youtube shows a 3D pong-like video game in which a bouncing ball removes bricks. Another part of the demonstration shows a woman's torso in 3D. Such a device could easily be used for teaching, entertainment, marketing, or communications. A video about the device is available on Youtube.

DOE Plans Lighting Alternatives Consumer Education Initiative
SSLDesign News Staff

July 23, 2010...The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will change what the United States uses for general lighting. The law, put into effect by then President Bush, plans a phase out of incandescent bulbs. Such a phase out can only be effective if the public knows about it. For this reason, the U.S. Department of Energy has announced plans for a new consumer education initiative that will be timed to the upcoming changes in light bulb regulation. According to the DOE, the initiative will provide greater awareness of the overall benefits of the legislative changes and new, “greener” technologies, such as LEDs and CFLs.

At an SSL Market Workshop that the DOE put on in Philadephia, representatives from GE, Philips, Cree, and Osram Sylvania, as well as major retailers including The Home Depot, Costco Wholesale and Grainger were on hand. The DOE notes that these partners are already set to work on the DOE's consumer education initiative. Additionally the DOE expects other partners to join in the effort. Crystal IS, Inc. Claims Best-Performing Ultraviolet LEDs for Water Disinfection
LIGHTimes News Staff

July 16, 2010...Crystal IS, Inc., a developer of ultraviolet LEDs (UVLEDs) reports that its has demonstrated that its efficient UVLEDs operating at 250nm have the necessary performance to replace mercury-based disinfectant lamps. In recently-published testing results Crystal IS demonstrated for the first time its unique diodes fabricated on a proprietary Aluminum Nitride (AlN) substrate.

“Previous efforts to develop practical LEDs at this wavelength have proven to be very difficult,” said Crystal IS CTO Leo Schowalter. “Most workers in the field have used conventional substrates, such as sapphire as the starting material, and have struggled to produce commercially viable lifetime and power results. Today we are demonstrating that we have overcome many of those issues.”

The company contends that its LEDs operate at the optimal germicidal wavelength. Additionally the company says that their proven efficacy, combined with low power requirements, small size, and longer lifespan, make the diodes ideal for use in water and air sterilization products.
