|
|
While general lighting applications are getting the news,
other applications, including automotive, LED projection and LED backlighting
for LCDs displays and signage continue to dominate the industry revenues.
How the technology is being transferred into these applications and the
key challenges to find optimized solutions will be discussed.
Mr. Winter has been with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors since April 2001 and
have been working as project manager for LED packaging as well as Marketing
Management for the Consumer and Comunication segment. He is currently located
in Taiwan and responsible for the LED sales and application engineering

2009 Keynote Talk - 5 years
of progress, 5 years of predictions |
|
| |
|
Norbert Hiller, Vice President & General
Manager, LED Components -- Cree Inc. |
|
| |
|
|
At Blue 2004, Cree President & CEO, Chuck Swoboda,
delivered a powerful keynote talk co-authored by Mr. Hiller that correctly
predicted the Taiwan LED industry consolidation, and emphasized the importance
of innovative approaches, both to add value, as well as to position the
industry for success in the applications that "we haven't even imagined
yet". 5 years later, we have invited Cree's Norbert Hiller to share a perspective on how the industry has done in meeting its goals for the last 5 years, and to offer thoughts on the expectations for the next 5 and beyond. |

|
George Craford, Chief Technical Officer
-- Philips Lumileds Lighting Company |
| |
|
|
A 2002, recipient of the National Medal of Technology
from the President of the United States in recognition of Craford's contributions
to LED technology, Dr. Craford first became known for the development of
nitrogen-doped GaAsP technology in the early 1970s, which became and
remains one of the dominant commercial LED technologies. At Hewlett-Packard,
Crafords group pioneered the development of AlInGaP LEDs, and has
developed AlGaAs and InGaN products.
Craford is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the National Academy of
Engineering. He has also received the IEEE Morris N. Liebmann Award, the
Holonyak Award of the Optical Society of America, the Welker Award of the
International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors, the Material Research
Society Medal, an IEEE Third Millenium Medal, and the Electronics Division
Award of the Electrochemical Society. |

While there may be a general slowdown in certain sectors,
such as desktop displays, LEDs are capturing an increasing share of the
backlight and displays that are shipped. Does that translate to net growth
in the sector? When can we expect the next "LED wave" to hit?
Will larger display manufacturers begin their own LED production in 2009
or 2010 and what will the impact be? |
